Willie Willie is a German Wirehaired Pointer. He was born in January 1999. He has been a joy to train. He is easy going and mindful. I am proud to say he is steady to wing and shot.( although I must admit this is mostly due to his own accord and not my skills as a trainer.) A sad note, When he was 5 months old he fractured his left femur. After surgery he never recovered full use of that leg. It is slightly deformed and he is unable to bend it. On the upside, it doesn't bother him or slow him down one bit! A hard lesson learned about feeding the correct food to a growing dog. I was feeding him a high protein "performance" food thinking the more protein the better. He grew too fast for the bones to keep up. Remember feed large breed dogs large breed puppy food! Update 7/30/01 - Willie developed an infection in his left leg (the bad one) and it was amputated by my Vet yesterday. He is home now and doing well. In fact, he appears to get around better than before! We will have to take it a little slow this season but I think he will be just fine. Besides, I just don't have the heart to take away his favorite thing; hunting. Update 01/07/02 - As promised I have some new pics of Willie pointing with three legs. I have to hand it to the dog, he can HUNT! He can hold his own with any 4 legged dog around! Update 03/11/02- Well ,I said he could hold his own and set out to prove it. I ran Willie in the Open Pointing division of the North American Gun Dog field trials in Huntsville ,TX this last weekend. He was just out of placing. Willie was running against dogs that were handled and trained by pro dog trainers and still did better than half of the 4 legged dogs out there. His scores were outstanding! I'm very proud of him!!! |
